The Almanac and Its Keepers
A Pinned Post for the Whole Internet
Every good community has a pinned post that saves newcomers from asking the same question for the hundredth time. This almanac is our attempt at one for internet culture as a whole: how groups form, how they talk, what they joke about and how they look after each other.
We are independent. We are not paid by platforms, conventions or publishers, and nothing here is sponsored. We write for curious newcomers, worried parents, returning old hands and anyone who wants to join a community with confidence rather than trepidation.
Who Writes the Entries
Mara Ellison
Editor. Has moderated hobby forums since the early 2000s and still believes in the search button.
Dev Ramaswamy
Fandom and convention correspondent. Writes fan fiction, sews badly, photographs cosplay well.
Josie Okafor
Meme historian and fact-checker. Keeps a spreadsheet of disputed origin dates and is not ashamed.
How We Keep Entries Fair
- We date events using primary sources where possible and note when origins are disputed.
- We describe communities as their members would recognise them, not as outsiders caricature them.
- We do not name or link private individuals who became memes without consent.
- We correct mistakes openly. Send corrections through our contact page.
